LVI Diagnostic/Therapeutic Injection Intensive

Advanced head and neck injection techniques are very effective diagnostic and therapeutic tools used to diagnose and manage a constellation of head and neck pathology; especially unresolved or chronic pathologies. This course, taught by LVI faculty Dr. Norman Thomas, Dr. John Pawlowicz and Dr. Brian Allman offers a very unique perspective of clinically relevant applied head and neck anatomy. Our faculty will review necessary anatomical landmarks with a detailed perspective of what, how and why to inject such structures as the TMJ, styloid process, greater and lesser occipital nerves, and a variety of muscles including the SCM, medial pterygoid, masseter, and more!

The objectives of this course are for the participant to be able to:

  • Define manifestations of muscle trigger points, nerve impingement and enesthopathy.
  • Discuss diagnostic criteria of an injectable trigger point, TMJ, tendon or ligament.
  • Understand the importance of early diagnosis and treatment of myofascial trigger points, arthralgia and enesthopathy as they relate to craniofacial pain management.
  • Implement proper injection hygiene protocol and post injection management.
  • Inject the masseter, temporalis, sternocleidomastoid, and trapezius muscles, styloid process, greater and lesser occipital nerves, stylomandibular ligament, coronoid process and temporomandibular joint.
  • Utilize non-injection techniques to anesthetize the sphenopalatine ganglion.
  • Utilize injectable medicaments including lidocaine, Sarapin, sugar and steroids.
  • Implement proper procedures regarding informed consent, injection codes and billing strategies.
  • Utilize proper patient verbiage for optimal therapeutic outcomes.
  • Determine fees for injection therapies.
